Harlem shake was one of the trends that blew the world away for a while in 2013. The rise of its popularity boomed like a rocket and even surpassed PSY’s Gangnam Style MV that dominated the biggest hit on YouTube for a long period of time. Why would Harlem Shake become a trend?

Harlem Shake was so popular that even the news broadcast station reported the phenomenon. |
Socialization, rapporting and recognition
Socialization
is the process by which people to acquire knowledge, skills, norm of a culture or
other aspects from others in every day of people’s lives. (What is the socialization process?, 2001) Human is social animal (Baumeister R. F, 2005); we all are living in a society where the sense of belonging is one of our basic needs in a certain degree, according to Maslow's hierarchy theory. So how can people be quickly integrated to a society circle? Rapporting - mirroring people's gestures, body posture or even breathing rhythm, is one of the method, and is a powerful tool to gain people's trust and building a close relationship (Wikipedia, n.d.). In the online social media world, having lots of "like" is a way to demonstrate one's online recognition. Rapport therefore would be a quick path to gain popularity, especially when there is somebody recognized by what he did online, people would imitate that person and hopefully he would be recognized too.
Rapport is a powerful tool for relationship building. (unknown author, n.d.) |
